Hamburg, Germany

Since my grandmother lives only an hour away, I visit Hamburg from time to time. Trading used to be the main reason to dock ships - and it still plays an important role today - but Hamburg offers much more than Reeperbahn and harbour.

Accommodation

  • Superbude: Twice in Hamburg, the hostel has not only a funny homepage but is clean and offers nice rooms for small budget.
  • 25 hours Hafencity: Each room is designed differently. However they follow one rule: The sea is the main topic.
  • EAST Hotel Hamburg: Near the city centre, the EAST is a high class design hotel which is worth every cent you spend here.
  • Hotel Wedina: Three houses in different colours in which books play an important role. Authors that stay here sign their latest oeuvres.
  • Empire Riverside Hotel: The tower surmounts the city and therefore the view from each room is endless. For some luxury.
Restaurants
    • Café Paris: French touch in Hamburg - as a lot of French people live here, the Cafe Paris may not be missed. Especially the breakfast on Sunday is adorable. And sitting in the "Bel-Etage" is less noisy than downstairs.
    • Klippkroog: Exquisite menu and simple decoration make me relax here.
    • Slowman: This restaurant is known because it was part of a TV show. Young people were trained by a famous German chief to become waiters or chiefs themselves. The result is rather impressive.
    • La Sepia, Schulterblatt 36: Portuguese food is just delicious, especially in La Sepia.
    • Deichgraf: A Hamburgian restaurant with Hanseatic charm and Northern food like fish, meat and potatoes.
    • Daniel Wischer: If you don't like fish, this restaurant won't be the best choice for you. But well, this is one of Hamburg's most known restaurants.
    • Amaranto: I love sharing tapas with friends because you can try so many different dishes. Plus a good vine and the night is wonderful.
    • Campus Suite: With a few locations in Northern Germany, this restaurant offers different snacks like Pasta, bakery products and soups for small prices.
    • BucksSportsbar: Once a while I have an urge to eat an burger and if it's the case in Hamburg, I go nowhere else than Bucks Sportsbar.
    • Edelcurry: Best french fries in town. Best "Curry wurst" in town. A place to try when in town.
      Bars & Nightlife
        • Goldfischglas: A bar in the party district Sternschanze with a variety of drinks for good prices.
        • Die Katze, Schulterblatt 88: Around Sternschanze I can highly recommend the Katze where young people love to hang out and drink some drinks. Happy Hour is until 10 PM, more to say?
        • Sommersalon: Seventies + Good DJ + People in good mood = Perfect night!
        • Hadleys: Check out the website to know all about the latest concerts in their venue. Some jazz, good drinks and nice people.
          Cafes
            • Café Reise Bar: Cafe, bar and travel agency in one room - for all amongst us who feel wanderlust.
            • Éclair au Café: A little place of sweet dreams, the French bakery offers homemade products. Better to take with you and enjoy somewhere outside than in the place as only few seats are available.
            • Café SternChance: The SternChance is a charity project in Hamburg that supports children. Moreover the cafe is great to have a coffee break.
            • Websters: Especially for breakfast the Websters in the city centre is a recommendable place.
            • Gretchens Villa, Marktstrasse 142: Best waffles in town. Love it!
            • Café Johanna: Near the Landungsbruecken, Cafe Johanna is a cosy place to have breakfast, lunch or some dinner with friends. The clear interior impresses me every time I come.
            • Liebesbisschen: You might have recognised it, but I am a cupcake lover, so I also checked out Liebes bisschen. And their cupcakes are good, really good. Believe me.
            • Herr Max: Mister Max - as I like to call him - brings nostalgia to Hamburg! The ancient milk shop (built in 1905 ) reflects with its colours (white, pink and baby blue) the product Herr Max offers: Cakes, Muffins, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tartes and much more.
            • Näscherei: Step down the 5 steps and enter a heaven for coffee, cake and some easy talking. Especially suitable for parents with kids as the little have toys to play.
            • Elbstrand: On sunny days the Hamburger love to hang out at the Elbstrand which is a beach at the river with various bars and cafes. Pick one and enjoy your day.
              Shopping
                • Kochkontor: A bookstore with cooking books from all over the world combined with a restaurant (choosing 1-2 books each day and cook the meals then)
                • Fischmarkt: Although you must get up at 5 AM (then the market opens its doors) it is indispensible to see fresh fish arriving from the Northern Sea. And once you are there, you should try a "Fischbroetchen" (fish burger), a speciality in Northern Germany.
                • Isemarkt: A weekly market under the railway offers fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meat and other food.
                • Mutterland: Three wonderfully decorated shops of Mutterland are located in Hamburg and they all sell German delicacies. Only foraging is fun!
                • Die Wohngeschwister: Die Wohngeschwister are 2 siblings that sell individual furniture and decoration for your home. Their credo: Your home is a mirror of yourself and your are unique.
                   Sights
                    • Boberger Dünen: Sand dunes in the middle of the city? Yes, they were even created naturally.
                    • Harbour City, Marco Polo terrace: Once the sun shines, a lot of people lie on wooden planks on the Marco Polo terrace and enjoy the view on huge cruise liners while the Unilever building touches the sky next to them.
                    • Hachez Chocoversum: Admittedly, I am addicted to chocolate and I therefore can't get enough of the museum.
                    • Fleethof: One of my favourite squares in Hamburg. Only steps away from the busy centre, I here can easily relax.
                    • Gewürzmuseum: In the historic Speicherstadt, the museum for spices exhibits ancient trading traditions.
                    • Kaffeerösterei Eppendorf: As coffee is a big part of Hamburg's trading, the roasting facility can't be better placed than here. Have you never asked yourself in the morning where your coffee comes from?
                    • Chilehaus: Discover the office building in the Speicherstadt which was constructed in 1922.
                    • Kramer Witwen Wohnung: Those apartments are the last remaining buildings in Hamburg from the 17th century.
                    • Blankenese: A little walk through Hamburg's richest district gives you an insight into the high society. But also the architecture of these ancient houses is highly interesting.
                      Special recommandation
                      • At the harbour a lot of boat excursions offered - often at high prices. The public transport (HVV) has a boat line that leaves from the Landungsbruecken and ships through the harbour. The whole round trip takes about an hour and costs only about 2€ or is even for free (if you have a day pass).

                      Berlin, Germany

When I first went to Berlin in 2006, I couldn't relate to it. My impression has changed dramatically when I took time to look around and to feel the spirit of it. Especially the historic relics make it to a very storytelling spot to go.
After the German reunification Berlin presents itself as booming capital. Historic spots, new clubs, fashion week, politics, bohemian streets, ... - you will find your place, that's for sure.

The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Triumph Arc, Louvre, Versailles, French Cuisine, ... I could talk forever about what Paris has to offer. And which is known worldwide. But here I want to share my favourite spots in the city. Those are rarely overcrowded by tourists and give you an idea how Paris really is. I hope you like them as much as I do.

                      Idyllic winter days

                      This morning: I couldn't resist!
                      Hi everyone,

Sorry for my little delay but due to great weather conditions I couldn't stop myself from starting this Sunday on the slope. I did Nordic Skating today which was the first time for me and, believe me, my but already hurts immensely. Yet it was total fun and I am up to do it another time this week!

I hope you had a great time with your family during the Christmas days. Since my brother is still in NZ, it was my first Christmas without him and I must say that it was kind of strange. However we had nice and calm days with good food, all kinds of stories to tell each other and presents that I will show you another time here. As weather conditions weren't that great until this weekend, we spontaneously decided to leave for some wellness days on Thursday. Our destination was Freiburg in Germany that we could easily combine with a visit at my cousins (such a cute guy). Beside that we focused on wellness, so I went to the sauna, swimming pool and had a message after which I felt slightly more tense than before. Haha.

Last night I went out with two of my best friends and we chatted about old times in our traditional restaurant and later ended up in my kitchen where we could have stayed all night long. It was amazing to remember old times and to see what everyone is up to now. I very much appreciate having them here and don't want to miss the fun I have with these guys.

Let me already tell you that the next post here will surprise you. I cannot wait to share it with you. So long, enjoy your holidays or if not - have a great week!

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

                      Happy Sunday!

While writing, I am still lying in my comfortable, warm and cosy bed and literally feel how stress is falling off. You know how the last three months went by and the last week was - again - no exception. But here I am back, back home for holiday season and glad that I survived the first part of my adventure in France.

During the last two weeks I've written 11 exams and I am pretty sure that there is the one or the other that might have been better. But regarding the quantity, this is normal, isn't it? When we finished the hard time on Wednesday, we had our annual 'End of the World' Party, this year's theme: Igloo, Igloo, Igloo. As stupid as it is, I only put on a hat and claimed that it is cold at the North pole, so I'd better protect my head.

After a good but quite short party, the day after was very hard. I had to pack all my stuff, clean the apartment and take 5 luggage pieces into the train. Yes right, I kind of did my moving with the French SNCF which was very stressful. Luckily I am a girl and there was always a helping hand when I had to carry my stuff all along the 500 m long train. But in the end, everything worked out very well and retrospectively, it was a fun experience!

Back home, I very much enjoy doing nothing or - wait! - skiing of course! I've been telling you a couple of (or maybe 1000) times that I love it and that I am looking forward to doing it throughout the entire year. Well, I began my season yesterday and it was great as usual. Tomorrow I head to the slopes again, yihaaa!

Last but not least, we are quickly approaching Christmas. I have all my presents, the tree is decorated and all the ingredients for the Christmas meals are shopped. Speaking of ingredients, I also baked a few Christmas cookies this week, the recipe with yogurt turned out to be really easy and yummy. So how shall I end a post on the 22nd of December?

Well of course, have a very merry Christmas.

                      Distracting Vastness

                      Studying?
                      Good morning my dears,

The Internet is a nasty little thing, did you know that? I am in the middle of exam period but instead of studying I lose myself in the infinitive vastness of the Internet. I mean, I am very happy that I am still alive after 6 exams that more or less killed me. But each time I came home, I wasn't able to study for the next exam and spent my time on Facebook, tumblr, Pinterest and Co. Originally planned 1 hour sessions ended eventually in long-stretched afternoons. Here is what I found.
                      • This guy is a god. As I speak three languages fluently, I know how difficult it is to learn and to remember any of them. But 11 is a miracle.
                      • Although I am not a ballerina, I can't stop watching them over and over again. These pictures express so much grace.
                      • My move to Paris next month is another evidence for my never-ending-moving. In this post, Rachel revealed a lot of my feelings. Oh, and this is my daily life in a program called "International Management".
                      • Beyonce is not my favourite artist. But these guys interpret her songs so well, that I might change my mind.
                      • I like that idea of having something that makes you happy, never mind in what situation you are. So girls, it's your time to start a happy life!
                      • When I found this webpage, I couldn't stop laughing: neighbours can be so creative, funny and mean at the same time. Let's wait for my next complaint note.
                      • Back to art: As a critical person regarding modern art, it's a personal revolution to show you these works. But it's one of the few moments when I like litter being transformed into art.
                      • Admittedly, I always do something different when safety instructions are given on a plane. But this time, even I watched.
                      • What is a good winter outfit? Warm, stylish and cosy. I love that one.
                      • My favourite for Christmas: WestJet plays Santa Clause is such a thoughtfully campaign. I keep wondering what miracle drink airlines took this year to have those great video ideas?
                      • And finally: I might adapt of these techniques, so that I avoid compiling lists like this one in future. Haha.
Actually, there was only one thing missing: I guess, I spent half of the week looking for great skiing/ winter blogs but couldn't find any that really touched me. If anyone of you writes a great winter blog with great stories and pictures, let me know. I am desperately searching!

Now back to the last subjects while drinking an amazing hot chocolate with an even greater cookie (here to buy). On Thursday I am driving home for Christmas - hooray! First semester done, next step Geneva and next year Paris. Love life.

                      Sunday, 8 December 2013

There's something under the Christmas tree.

Good morning and happy 2nd Advent!

Today, it's about presents (= gifts, for all my American readers) . I can't believe it, but I got pretty much all of them during the last week although I should have been occupied with learning. Yeah, should.

It's the same problem every year: What is the perfect present for my beloved ones? Then, I click through the Internet - Amazon, Zalando, Pinterest, blogs. Like a crazy one, I stroll through the city and have a quick and hectic look into the boutiques. Even as a very organised person, I cannot call me so for Christmas time, though. I admire those who start taking notes throughout the year to be not stressed in December. Maybe I have just this problem because I never know what to put on my wish list myself and that I transfer this habit to others automatically. (This year it was pretty easy for me: iPhone 5. All that matters).

So, here a few insights into this year's presents since I assume (hope!) that the concerned persons don't read my blog.

                      • SOS Present: I was invited to a party yesterday where everyone had to bring a present. I wasn't prepared at all, so I grabbed a bottle of good (!) wine, some exquisite chocolate and wrote a nice poem about the person. My tip for all late-in-time-strugglers!
                      • Perfume: When I was in Paris a month ago, I went to the Fragonard Shop to let my Mom try some fragrances. And then I ordered the best one for her on their website. Let's see whether she will be surprised or whether she has already guessed something.
                      • Bracelets: Normally, I am not patient enough for tinkering. But for my friends I wanted to have something special and personal, so I designed bracelets in a store only 2 minutes from my apartment away. I chose charms that reflect their personalities. Simple and effective.
SOS present: Wine & exquisite chocolate
                      Perfume samples
                      For my Mom
                      For my friends
I hope you could get a little inspiration with this post. If not, check out some ideas here (Pinterest, in general, is a great inspiration), here, here and here.

But before I end today, let me tell you the best news and probably one of the greatest Christmas presents ever:
I WILL BE MOVING TO PARIS FOR 6 MONTHS.
Another internship is on my plan (this time: Project Financial Controlling) - as you know, they keep me quite busy here. But with the location, a dream comes true. So guys, if you have any hints for an apartment, let me know, please! It's so hard to find something that is well located - but never mind how much I will spend, I guess, it's worth it.

P.S. You might have wondered where the music comes from: I thought of including a little Christmas playlist coming from my favourite Christmas movies to bring some festive atmosphere to the blog.
